PIM Mitigation Materials Backlobe Suppressor

Fabric-wrapped foam solutions for passive intermodulation (PIM) mitigation.

PIM Mitigation Materials Overview

Passive intermodulation (PIM) is a problem unique to high-power cellular infrastructure. When two or more strong RF signals interact at a non-linear junction (a corroded connector, a poorly torqued mounting bolt, even a metal fence near a tower), they generate intermodulation products that fall back into receive bands and degrade network performance. PIM is invisible until it isn’t, and once it’s present in a deployed cell site, it can drop receiver sensitivity significantly. The PM Series addresses this by absorbing reflected and scattered RF energy near antenna installations, reducing the high-power signal levels that drive non-linear mixing in nearby metal hardware.

The PM Series is most commonly deployed at 3G, 4G/LTE, and 5G cellular sites where PIM has been identified as a throughput-limiting problem, on both macro cell and small cell installations. The internal foam is the AF Series Lossy variant; the PIM mitigation packaging adds a weatherproof Herculite fabric exterior (MIL-C-43006/55308 Type 2) for outdoor durability against UV exposure, rain, and temperature cycling over multi-year deployments.

The PM Series is available in three thicknesses: 0.500″, 1.000″, and 2.000″. The 0.500″ thickness is specified where mounting space is constrained. The 1.000″ and 2.000″ thicknesses are selected through trial and field measurement based on the PIM characteristics observed at the antenna. Tower operators and wireless integrators typically evaluate both options on-site and select based on measured PIM reduction.

Key Features

  • Passive Intermodulation (PIM) Suppression – specifically designed to minimize nonlinear junctions and reflections that generate PIM in cellular antennas.
  • Broadband Cellular Coverage – effective across 600 MHz to 40 GHz, supporting 4G LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, and backhaul links.
  • Custom Thicknesses (0.500″ – 2.000″) – optimized absorber loading and geometry for reliable attenuation without excess weight or bulk.
  • Antenna Retrofit Compatibility – supplied as sheets or pre-cut kits, ensuring easy integration onto existing base station or small-cell infrastructure.
  • Weatherproof Fabric Wrap – UV-resistant, hydrophobic, and durable under extreme environmental conditions.
  • Low Outgassing / Telecom-Grade Materials – compliant with industry reliability requirements for long-term outdoor deployments.
  • Lightweight & Easy to Install – engineered for quick field installation using standard mechanical fasteners or adhesives.
